The most crucial innovation was that <Malinowski> actually pitched his tent in the middle of the village, learned the language in its colloquial form, and observed directly at first hand just how his Trobriand neighbors behaved throughout the 24 hours of an ordinary working day. No European had ever done this before and the kind of ethnography that resulted was completely new.
- Edmund R. Leach

Малиновского, наиболее известного "mythic culture hero of anthropological method".

эта роль постепенно переходит от миссионеров к "academically trained natural scientists defining themselves as anthropologists".

М., G.S. постоянно подчеркивает, что тот не просто следовал уже написанным инструкциям; однако "the kind of ethography that resulted" был не столь новым, как полагал E.L.

называет то, что "their early monographs did not present them as self-conscious ethnographic innovators."**

Описание полевой работы в малайской деревне Rosemary Firth завершает так: "During my last week in Malaya, I had a nightmare dream, in which I was a Malay peasant, a woman crouching over the fire to blow up the embers for an evening meal. I awoke in terror, momentarily confused about my own identity, Malay woman or English scientist."

* "Publication of matters concerning the Government with whom one has enjoyed a confidential and cooperative relation, without discussion of the material beforehand, amounts to a betrayal of confidence. It would make cooperation in future work extremely difficult for oneself and for other anthropologists. As primitive peoples become more westernized and more sophisticated, the same rules of confidence will apply to them." Чуть выше: "But practices that can only be termed criminal by the European administration, such as infanticide and sadistic punishments and abortion, do occur in primitive societies ... Should the research worker report to Governmentthe individual cases? If it is an undesirable practice, the important issue is not that it does occur, but why it occurs. Such explanation will be far more valuable to Government ..."
** E.g. "<o>ne of their ideas was to meet the problem of theft <of food> with their conception of European justice, namely public execution. Two thieves who had been caught in the act were rapidly and excitedly sentenced to death. But immediately before their execution I intervened ... I took the two prisoners to my house.
I sat in my house sadly reflecting that my role as an observer had come to an end. It had taken a long time, but at last I realized that this could not be an ordinary field trip.
"
*** "Firth had been assigned kinship status in 1929. He was ‘son’ to the premier chief of the island and ‘brother’ to the heir apparent, the eldest son of the chief. I was ‘brother’ to the third chief, and to this third chief in turn Firth was ‘father’. My connection to Firth’s ‘brother’, the heir apparent of the premier chief, was that of _tau soa_, a traditional, stylized, and intimate form of friendship ..." James Spillius. "About January 26, 1952, approximately seven weeks before our arrival, catastrophe struck the island. A hurricane destroyed the entire coconut and breadfruit crops and flooded various areas of this island."
R.F., - what might be called an operational research role, in that I interpreted Government and the Tikopia to each other, but in so doing, I tried not to determine policy for either side in relation to the other ... I was forced to deal with problems on the spot as they came up, instead of saving up a solution for a set of recommendations to Governmentafter I had left the field."
и J.S. "were thought to partake of the enormous power of Government and Europeans. At times we were treated as a symbol of European power. At others we were treated as practical representatives of it."

Во-первых, они тесно связаны с вождями и maru (i.e. "<a chief's> brothers and close relatives in the male line, who are his executive officers ... They carry out the chief’s orders, but they also act as a check on the chief’s authority."): считаются их родственниками***, участвуют в организации их встреч с представителями колониального правительства etc.
Также J.S. указывает на разделение политических сил на острове по конфесииональному признаку - "<the Mission> has managed to convert to Christianity the second chief of the island ... and his entire clan. The other three chiefs ... have remained intensely pagan, even though the majority of the members of their clans have been converted. At the same time, these converts remain politically loyal to their chiefs. This split between the Christian and the pagan chiefs has aggravated even further the traditional factionalism". Еще во время первой экспедии R.F., поддерживая отношения с обеими сторонами, был ближе к язычникам - "I was in amicable relation with the principal Mission teacher, who was not a Tikopia, as with the other teachers, who were ... I attended Christian and pagan funerals alike, but I did not go to church on Tikopia and I showed no particular respect for Sabbath or Lent, nor for mission teachings about God, Heaven and Hell. This was deliberate policy, because I wished to understand the traditional Tikopia religious system. So I showed approval of pagan rites ... by attending them with enthusiasm and participating in them as a contributor." Во время кризиса, по описанию J.S., отношения накалились, и "<t>he Christian group no doubt considered Firth as part of the pagan camp"; перечисляя события после кризиса, J.S.

[Wikipedia]: "During the Second World War Firth worked for British naval intelligence, primarily writing and editing the four volumes of the Naval Intelligence Division Geographical Handbook Series that concerned the Pacific Islands."
** Подобным же образом свой статус позже будет описывать, например, David M. Schneider (к этому моменту уже знакомый с работой by Ira Bashkow): "<the Yapese> certainly saw that I was in no way allied with the navy; for one thing, I provided them with liquor, which was strictly against the law".
описывает некоторую встречу местных вождей и District Comissioner, при которой переводчиком выступал кто-то другой - "<t>he chiefs made a spectacular entry after everyone else had assembled, taking their seats in front of the crowd, with the D.C. and the interpreter facing them. (This day, seats had also been placed for the anthropologists, adjacent to that of the D.C.; we preferred however to dissociate ourselves from the proceedings and observe from the sidelines.)"

R.F., "access to Tikopia was difficult and rare - usually annually at best - and almost entirely though the Melanesian Mission"; контакты с внешним миром расширились после WW2, когда на Британских Соломоновых островах был снят запрет на найм полинезийских рабочих; "within the general colonial system of plantation labour the Tikopia now have colonies of their own in other islands of the Solomons, in addition to many people scattered in employment of various grades throughout the Solomons".

Еще одно предварительное замечание: "I take as my starting point", - сообщает R.F. - "Talal Asad's statement ... that it is a mistake to view Social Anthropology primarily as an aid to colonialism or as the simple reflection of colonialist ideology"; касается особой позиции антрополога - "although I arrived in Tikopia on the mission vessel ... I did not wish to be identified with the mission, any more than with government. What I presented to the Tikopia was my own personal point of view sometimes coinciding with that of mission or of government, sometimes differing radically from either."**

пишет: "I declined to press the government to pass a law enjoining infanticide to limit the numbers of large families, as one enthusiastic leading Tikopia requested me to do."
описывает роль антропологов в кризисной ситуации: "<i>f in my first stay in Tikopia I could virtually ignore the colonial authorities, in my second stay I was interested in mobilizing and using them. Tikopia was threatened with famine, my colleague <James> Spillius and I had a radio, and we used it constantly to report the situation and ask for relief supplies. In close consultation with the chiefs and other leading Tikopia we evaluated the needs of the people month by month, and after we were asked by government to distribute the rice and other food that was sent, we did so according to a scheme agreed upon in these consultations."

R.F. отводит обсуждению их роли и, среди прочих, вопросу "do the Tikopia chiefs exploit their people?", но делает это в контексте вопроса "how far the broadly functionalist assumptions of the older anthropologists dictated their conclusions".
Вообще вопрос связи антрополога с властью не-европейцев почти не поднимается в сборнике; редкое исключение представляет заключение by Ioan M. Lewis: "it is precisely here," - т.е. после получения колонией независимости - "that the most challenging ethical problems arise ... it is easy to swagger around protesting one's dedication to the overthrow of a right-wing colonial regime ... But it is much more difficult to decide where, in an independent Black state, the anthropologist's loyalty lies when there is an irreconcilable conflict between local-level and national, indigenous interests. Nor are these problems eased when one confronts a despotic regime (particularly if it claims to be left-wing) whose enlightened development plans and projects would automatically receive support from most well-intentioned anthropologists."

"The Burma army of that time <1940> had British officers and local troops ... Perhaps not very surprisingly, attempts to recruit Burmese and Shans proved largely abortive ... because of my linguistic knowledge I found myself before long specially earmarked as a recruiting officer for the Kachin Hills. In this role, I visited many parts of the Kachin Hills area which otherwise I would have been very unlikely to see at all."
"Once the Japanese war started it was perfectly obvious ... that the British would get pushed out of Burma ... <the Governor was persuaded> to leave behind a network of spies and guerillas until such time as the British armed forces could return ... By January 1942 I had been seconded from my Burma Rifles Regiment to a mysterious 'X List', and soon found myself embroiled with various shady characters known by letters of the alphabet and numbers."
Сводятся они примерно к следующему: "If I had not had my anthropological background I would not have got seconded into the peculiar cloak-and-dagger activities which were part of my destiny. But what the reader of this series wants to know, presumably, is whether my anthropological findings ... would have been different if my research had been conducted in a different sociological climate. I do not see how I or anyone else could possibly answer such a question."***

P.S. он был участником семинара Малиновского и "was engaged in writing a diploma thesis based on his work as an administrator in the Chin Hills of Burma"; "it was through him that I came to undertake fieldwork in the Kachin Hills on the borders of Burma and Yunnan."

___
* Как сообщает во вступлении Peter Loizos, публикации предшествовал семинар с чуть большим числом участников - "One of the most lively papers presented in the seminar was that given by M. G. Smith who noted, scanning the list of participants, that he was the only 'coloured colonial' to give a paper ... Since he had made it a condition of his participation that he would not write anything, one can only comment regretfully on the interest his paper would have given to this collection. Smith's first publications, he informed the seminar, were Jamaican nationalist pamphlets, and certainly his perspective on colonial systems ... is quite different from that of the contributors here."
** "I was never actually a member of ... Force 136, nor was I later involved in either of the Wingate operations, or with 'V Force', but peripherally my war was muddled up with all these things as well as others ... I was in and out of Burma on many occasions and visited many parts of the Kachin Hills as well as other parts of Western Burma and Assam."

"In 1910 the American ethnographer William Henry Furness III published Island of Stone Money ... At this time there was a significant body of writing about Yap in German, but little in English." W.F., "represents wealth as potentially as the hoarded inactive gold of a miser of the middle ages, or as our silver dollars stacked in the treasury at Washington, which we never see nor touch, but trade with on the strength of a printed certificate that they are there."

сосредотачивается на работе by Fitzpatrick & McKeon - "the most expansive and thoughtful comparison of Bitcoin and stone money". использует в первую очередь для того, чтобы приписать мотив "for Fitzpatrick and McKeon’s analogy" - стремление "to annex the obduracy of stone on behalf of the notoriously flighty Bitcoin"; "<F&G's> article is in essence a form of cryptocurrency advocacy".
Критика предложенных сходств как "inaccurate, ill-defined, and/or trivial" более убедительна. Мне не кажется осмысленным пересказывать ее здесь, приведу лишь одно ответвление: "it must be acknowledged that different aspects of the two systems are available to public scrutiny. With respect to Bitcoin, what is made public is a complete history of transactions among anonymized entities. Bitcoin is conspicuously opaque in other respects, and its capacity to elude state scrutiny is often declared one of its advantages." указывает на иное положение крупных камней Раи среди других ценностей: "Yapese hid their wealth, be it shell valuables, cash, or planted food in order to give themselves control over its disposal. Friends, relatives, and fellow villagers could not make claims to what they did not know existed."

** "Within economics, the Anglophone presentation of Yapese stone money has typically involved opportunistic claims about the nature of money, and often specifically been invoked in relation to evolutionary or teleological accounts of money. Bluntly put, stone money has been opportunistically used to illustrate supposed transitions from inferior to superior money forms."

Walton - "Bitcoin and Stone Money: Anglophone Use of Yapese Economic Cultures 1910-2020" (2020, version i)
P.S. D.S. предполагает*** еще одну причину переезда - "I really think that I honestly ... felt that somehow there was some way of getting true, unacculturated, authentic, untouched, pristine Yapese culture; and that, naturally, I couldn't get it from highly acculturated, Christianized, missionized people."

___
* В 1885 г. "Importing Filipinos for their garrison and Christian Chamorros as domestic servants, the Spaniards had little need for native labor and were thus inattentive to Yapese chiefs". В 1899 г.
"Назначенные" вожди отвечали за выделенные европейцами территориальные единицы, а не сложившиеся альянсы не обязательно граничащих деревень (хотя некоторая преемственность была - "the eight village capitals were those generally cited as 'most important' in precolonial and Spanish reports").
*** "Now I'm not sure that Bashkow noticed this, and I may not have written it clearly in my notes ... but I must've been sensitive enough to the fact that that was really not only a fantasy, but it was a nineteenth-century fantasy. Still, I really feel that was a very important element in my thinking."

Система "назначенных" вождей не слишком соответствовала местной иерархии - "the highest chiefs were sacred figures, often aged and largely immobile, whose dignity was ill-served by running errands for the foreigners", и колониальную "должность" обычно занимал вождь более низкого ранга; "<w>hereas foreigners saw <appointees> as active, executive authorities, the Yapese saw them as messengers, bearing messages from Colonia"**. Были и исключения: "<c>hiefs of Rull, - одного из политических центров, - became the closest associates of German and Yapese officials; and in Rull ... the highest-ranking indigenous chief ... had by the end of the German period assumed the colonial district chieftainship"; после смерти этого вождя японские власти признали наследником его старшего сына Ruwepong, вопреки решению местного highest council. Когда в 1944 году острова перешли США, "Ruwepong had anticipated that the new Ameriean commander would inquire as to the identity of high chief, and made sure that he and Fani'ch'or <his supporter> stayed close to Colonia; the commander inquired, Ruwepong stepped forward, and Fani'ch'or confirmed that he and Rull were 'number one.' Fani'ch'or was appointed the new district chief of Gagil, and the Americans invested Ruwepong with a novel tide: hereditary 'king of Yap'".
"During the spring of 1947, - т.е. D.S. - a young naval officer, Lt. Kevin Carroll, was approached by a man from Tomil <another Yapese center> and told of Ruwepong's usurpation"; K.C. расспросил других япцев, и вскоре "Fani'ch'or was replaced, and Ruwepong exiled to distant Guam - along with Fani'ch'or's young acolyte, <Pitemag> ... Four months later ... when the four Harvard anthropologists stopped in Guam for two weeks on their way to Yap, they were put in touch with <Pitemag>, who gave them lessons in Yapese."

Поскольку "on Yap, kinship terms were used only in third-party reference, not in address", D.S. D.S. "was convinced that he and <another anthropologist> were considered 'chief-changers and chief-makers'"; именно с этим I.B. связывает решение перенести работу "on Rumung, the politically less consequential northernmost island of the archipelago."

(Schneider)

в составе одной из экспедиций, организованных совместно с the United State Navy; именно USN в это время de facto контролировало* острова. Хотя участники экспедиций имели право "to study what they might and to report on any matters not 'affecting national defense'", от них ожидался и доклад, соответствующий нуждам колониальной администрации.

D.S. Можно объяснить это необходимостью установить доверительные отношения с информантами; эгалитаризмом D.S.**; особенностями его характера; желанием "to be fair to the natives", "to do things properly", не быть "an exploitative, dishonest person"; стремлением понравиться***; привычкой симпатизирующего коммунизму еврея дистанцироваться от других американцев.
же, среди прочих подарков, привозил и спиртное, демонстрируя, что он "in no way allied with the navy". Это повлекло другую проблему: "... if Schneider broke laws willingly and with impunity, it could only mean that he was above them. To every subsequent ceremony, <a village chief> had Schneider bring two bottles of beer, which he would insist that they drink at a climactic moment," - сообщает Ira Bashkow, опираясь на полевые заметки D.S. - "Wondering 'why <the chief> ostentatiously drinks beer with me,' Schneider noted in February the old man's 'advertising' that '<D.S. is> of even higher rank than the navy' ..."
Ниже I.B. сносился с командованием USN и в какой-то степени влиял на решения колониальной администрации; он привозил подарки, которые доставались жителям той деревни, в которой он работал; "<w>hen Schneider gained permission for <an informant> to scavenge a decommissioned Navy landing craft - for 'my own evil ethnographie purposes,' in order to see how the booty was later distributed - it was clear that his generosity could overwhelm any effort of reciprocity".

** "One of the first places where I thought I improved my rapport tremendously was when somebody got killed in a village near where I was living. I knew that he'd been killed in a drunken party. Everybody was ... waiting for me to report them to the police. And I never said a word to the police. ... Was that an immoral thing for me to have done? The way I saw it, I live in this village, I'm a member of this village ..."
*** "Geoffrey Gorer pointed out that one of the differences between the English and the Americans doing fieldwork is that the Americans want to be loved. And so you do anything to be loved and accepted. And the English doing fieldwork, they want to be respected. They don't care if you like them or not. ... I knew it was true with me."

"A Critique of the Study of Kinship" by David M. Schneider и ряда других антропологов; "<this description> cleaves as closely as possible to the standart anthropological forms, premises, theories, presumptions, presuppositions about kinship".

Но эти термины используются не только как родственные - например, "<village> is made up of an association of lineages and the relationship between its officers and the members of the village are described as citamangen-fak, or father to child".
Широкому использованию этих терминов, а также ряду других свойств, (1) обязано заключением: "This is a kin-based society ... because all its functions - landholding, authority, politics, religion and so on - are phrased in terms of the idiom of kinship".

"The Yapese formulate the relationship between citamangen and fak," - сообщает (2), - "in terms of authority and dependency ... Citamangen provides for his fak when they are young and weak and without knowledge, but when the fak grow to near-adulthood the child returns the care and the provisions which the old person needs. A mother's husband and her child (among many others) are citamangen and fak respectively to each other. But this terminology may be reversed when the mother's husband is old, relatively helpless and dependent on his wife's son."
"For Yap, as both descriptions suggest, it is land which is held in highest value. The relationship between citamangen and fak is one between those who hold land and those who, if they behave themselves, can gain the fruits of that land and under certan circumstances may have the right to succeed to the position of landholder. Their kinship relationship is, in this sense, encompassed in the idiom of land."

P.S. "I have called it a 'reservoir system' elsewhere (Schneider 1953) since, while only one person occupies the status marked by the kinship term at one time, there is a reservoir of persons ready to step into the position when that person dies."

Пример: "I have suggested for the Mae Enga that the idiom of agnation is used to describe simply relations of inclusion ... I might say that Uncle Sam is father of California who is father of San Francisco; but this statement would imply neither that my mother's brother founded the United States nor that St Francis of Assisi is his grandson" [Barnes, op. cit.].

"From many sources we learn of legends, traditions, ritual practices which seem to imply a belief that women may sometimes be made pregnant by means other than insemination by a human male. The simplest way of 'explaining' such a belief is to say that it is due to the ignorance of the believer." "This, of course, is a very ancient tradition. In anthropological writing, ignorance is a term of abuse."

Если E.R.L. считает знание об отцовстве всеобщим "on common-sense grounds", John A. Barnes интересуется его источником. "Thus for most of the historic period in the West, the uniqueness of physical paternity was a cultural construct for which there was very little conclusive evidence." Следовательно, объяснения требуют не только полевые данные - "why in the pre-scientific West the dominant folk theory happened to be ... more or less in accord with evidence from nature later to be disclosed"?

В связи с этим J.A.B. заключает, что "cultural motherhood is a necessary interpretation in moral terms of a natural relation, whereas the relation of genitor is an optional interpretation, in the idiom of nature, of an essentially moral relation."

P.S. Забавно, что J.A.B.

*** "... when these beliefs are compared, the yardstick used is falsely presented, for we tend to assume that for ourselves no distinction between formal science and informal ethnoscience is needed."
