* В 1885 г. на островах, и до этого посещаемых европейцами, появляется испанский губернатор и основывается Colonia - колониальная столица. "Importing Filipinos for their garrison and Christian Chamorros as domestic servants, the Spaniards had little need for native labor and were thus inattentive to Yapese chiefs". В 1899 г. Испания продает остатки своих тихоокеанских владений, включая Яп, Германии. В 1914 г. их захватывает Япония.
** Были и другие несоответствия. "Назначенные" вожди отвечали за выделенные европейцами территориальные единицы, а не сложившиеся альянсы не обязательно граничащих деревень (хотя некоторая преемственность была - "the eight village capitals were those generally cited as 'most important' in precolonial and Spanish reports"). Новшеством были и функции "назначенных" вождей.
