AR glasses Specs got shown live on stage

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel put on Specs and demoed them in front of a live audience.

What the demo covered:

▫️ Palm and finger controls: a menu appears on your hand, opened with a tap from the other

▫️ Snapchat - snap a photo with your fingers, make video calls where the other person sees through your eyes

▫️ YouTube right in the glasses, launched through the voice assistant

▫️ Shopify-powered AR shopping - place a product in your room at true scale and buy it with one tap

▫️ An official Harry Potter AR experience made with HBO

Specs are priced at $2,195 and positioned as the first fully standalone true AR glasses.

No confirmed ship date yet. But choosing to demo this live, not in an ad, is itself a signal: they're confident the hardware actually works.

An Entire Country as One AR Object

Singapore wants to "digitize" itself completely - so robots and AR devices can understand the city as precisely as GPS understands coordinates.

Niantic Spatial and the Singapore Land Authority want to build a VPS at the scale of an entire country.

Here's the idea: Singapore already has detailed 3D scans of the whole city, made for maps and urban planning. Normally, for AR navigation to work precisely, every street has to be scanned separately - slow and expensive.

The question here is whether you can just take existing government data and turn it into a precise navigation system, without rescanning anything from scratch.

If it works, this won't just be navigation in an app. It'll be precise, centimeter-level positioning for robots, drones, emergency services, and any AR object that needs to know exactly where it is.

Right now, this kind of precise positioning system is usually built for one specific place - a museum, a mall, a single block. Here, they're trying to do the same thing, but for an entire country at once.

If it works, AR stops being "dots on a map" and becomes city-scale infrastructure.

That same invisible layer we keep talking about - the one everything else gets built on.

visionOS 27 opens Vision Pro to tracked physical objects and accessories

The new visionOS 27 release expands one of the most important APIs for spatial developers: spatial accessories - previously limited to first-party devices like the Logitech Muse and PS VR2 Sense controllers - can now be built from scratch by third-party manufacturers.

The recipe is simple: a constellation of LEDs plus an IMU (inertial measurement unit) plus a Bluetooth chip inside the device, and Vision Pro tracks it as a full 6DoF object.

Separately, Apple upgraded regular object tracking (for objects with no embedded electronics - just a 3D scan): it now supports tracking moving and handheld items at high frame rate, not just stationary ones.

Apple is also shipping reference hardware from DFRobot and MikroE - ready to use directly in apps, no need to build your own electronics from scratch.

For AR industry an important shift. Digital experiences can now be tied much more tightly to real physical objects - a tool, a controller, a prototype, a toy, a museum exhibit, a piece of equipment.

Independent experts are arriving at the exact same conclusion we've been making: AR will replace smartphones. Sooner than you think.

The future of AR is being built right now - by the people who try, fail, push against the limits of the technology, ask other creators for advice, and take the first step anyway.

We're one of them.

And we're glad to welcome anyone else who wants to ride this wave onto our platform - artists, creators, enthusiasts, brands, and businesses.

The ones who'd rather build than watch others build.

Join us - let's build this future together!

CHAPTER 2 - EPISODE 6

The footage rushed into the past. And then something flashed in the corner of the screen.

Janus slowed down, rewound a bit…

And — “What nonsense…”

Over the sea, a Butterfly hovered. An absurd 3D model. Its milky wings were adorned with black obsidian framed in liquid gold.

“What idiot left this garbage in the working layer?” Janus grumbled. “Zoom in. Delete.”

His hand reached for the butterfly to throw it beyond the visible area. But as soon as he touched its wing, reality shifted and flew apart. With every beat of its wings—back, faster and deeper into the past.

If you can't tell "marker-based AR" from "SLAM tracking," you can't tell a real AR proposal from a good-looking pitch deck.

We just published part two of our AR series on the blog, missed part one?

This one goes under the hood.

Inside:

▫️ What actually happens between your camera opening and an AR object appearing
▫️ Why SLAM tracking is why your AR object doesn't drift through the table
▫️ Marker-based vs markerless AR - the real difference and when each one wins
▫️ How cloud anchors enable persistent AR that "remembers" where it was
▫️ The exact questions to ask any vendor pitching you an "AR project"

If part one was AR for everyone, this one is for people who actually need to make decisions about AR - marketers, producers, product leads.

And yes, it pairs perfectly with last week's FOOH vs Real AR piece. Together they're the two-part detector for when someone's selling you video and calling it augmented reality.

CHAPTER 2 - EPISODE 5

In the evening, in his hotel room, Janus put on old industrial AR glasses.

Smith obligingly retrieved them from a worn case and connected them with a thick cable to the Chronos-Scanner. And the world swam.

“Search for Fateh platforms. Period — starting from commissioning,” commanded Janus.

He found himself on a metal giant in the middle of the bay, ten years earlier.

Everything around was marked with AR tags: [System pressure: normal], [Engineer Rashid: shift ends at 02:15].

He saw the world through the eyes of some technician. Routine.

“Speed up. Search for conflicts, panic, errors.”

Remember that giant Jacquemus bag "rolling" through Paris? Or the giant Coca-Cola can "crashing" into a billboard?

Everyone thought it was AR. Everyone was wrong.

That's FOOH - Fake Out-of-Home. CGI video that looks like AR but isn't.

We wrote a full breakdown on our blog:

▫️ What actually separates FOOH from real AR
▫️ Why marketers keep confusing them
▫️ The hidden risks of FOOH that never make it into case studies
▫️ When FOOH works, and when you need real AR

Spoiler: if your audience needs to physically do something - show up, touch, scan - FOOH is useless.

Can you spot the difference between FOOH and AR at first glance?🤔

You know what will make 2030 different from 2026?

Nothing.

We'll just stop noticing the difference.

By 2030, AR glasses will cost about the same as a smartphone does today. They won't be worn by tech enthusiasts - they'll be worn by your parents, your colleagues, and the neighbor down the hall.

Navigation will disappear from phones and appear directly in your field of view. Price tags in stores will show reviews and ingredients in your language. Cafes, museums, entire streets - all layered with digital content invisible without glasses.

AI characters will greet you at storefronts, explain exhibits in galleries, guide you through cities. Not from a script - in real conversation.

And the most interesting part - none of this will feel like a revolution. It'll just be background. The way Wi-Fi, GPS, or wireless headphones are now.

A revolution only looks like magic in the year it arrives. A few years later, it's just normal.

We're already building that 2030. Every day.

We wrote a big guide for our blog - what AR actually is, in plain English.

Honestly, AR is so hyped right now that even people inside the industry sometimes get confused. Everyone's talking about "spatial computing," "the metaverse," "AI glasses," "AR vs VR" — and it turns into noise.

So we decided to start from the beginning.

In the new article:

▫️ What AR is in one sentence (and why it's not the metaverse)
▫️ Where you've already used AR without realizing it
▫️ The real difference between AR, VR, Mixed Reality, and Spatial Computing
▫️ Why 2026 is the year AR stopped being a novelty
▫️ Which devices already support AR (spoiler: your phone)

It's part one of a trilogy - next up we'll break down how AR actually works under the hood, and where it's being used across industries.

Full read here 👉 AR Spatially

And for those already deep in AR - what's the most memorable AR experience you've had? Drop it in the comments.

CHAPTER 2 - EPISODE 4

Smith leaned closer, and the smell of cheap cologne wrinkled Mr. Wolfe’s nose.

“There is one… unofficial tool. The Chronos-Scanner. Delivered contraband. Allows connection to closed AR channels of the past. Everything recorded through glasses. Tested
on Fateh — it works. You can peek at their dirty laundry.”

“Illegal?” Janus Wolfe looked at Smith in such a way that he shrank. Then he smiled.

“Excellent. Just how I like it. I think you and I will become friends.”

Thursday AR Digest

Three of the most interesting stories from AR, spatial computing, and machine learning over the past weeks.

🏛 The Louvre launched an AR tour with Snapchat

The world's largest museum, in partnership with Snapchat, launched "The Incredible Unknowns of the Louvre" - an AR experience that brings to life artworks visitors usually walk past. Right on their smartphones, no special infrastructure needed.

The signal here is important: institutions the size of the Louvre no longer treat AR as an experiment. AR is becoming standard storytelling infrastructure - the way audio guides once were.

🗺 Niantic Spatial launched a global 3D map of the world

The company spun out from the makers of Pokémon GO released an updated Scaniverse - a platform that turns physical spaces into 3D models. They also launched Visual Positioning System 2.0 for precise geolocation inside real-world environments.

This is the foundation of the "spatial internet" - an internet that understands not just text and images, but physical space itself. AI is no longer trapped inside the screen. It's stepping outside.

🤖 Google DeepMind released Gemini Robotics ER 2

On July 30, a new model landed that lets robots "think" about the physical world and plan complex multi-step tasks. It's already running on Boston Dynamics Spot - the robot can understand natural language commands and execute them without "pause and think" moments.

This is a step toward the moment when AI stops being just "a brain inside a computer" and starts actively operating in physical reality.

What all three stories have in common: technology is stepping out of the screen into the real world. AR brings art to life. 3D mapping digitizes spaces. AI starts driving robots.

At AR Spatially, we're building exactly at that intersection - where digital meets physical.

Which story feels most important to you? 🤔

CHAPTER 2 - EPISODE 3

"We absorb and divide the company. Sell Fateh to All Oil Industries. The NUR laboratories - piece by piece to all interested parties. Everyone wants control technologies for managing workers now.”

“This won’t be easy. They don’t show it, but they have their own mind. They have an impeccable reputation and never give up,” Smith stated.

“We've seen such,” Janus was always aroused by such complexities. “Meeting with the board of directors is tomorrow. I must know everything… I repeat—every weakness of Oasis Energy.”

We just published a deep technical piece on Medium - about the biggest hidden limitation of standard AR.

There's a popular technology called Augmented Image: you anchor a 3D model to a real-world image, and it "comes to life." Works out of the box on Android and iOS. Great for gallery paintings, posters, product packaging.

But it has two problems:

1. Only works within 5 meters. So a painting on a wall - yes. A logo on a skyscraper - no.

2. Doesn't recognize "simple" images. Minimalist logos, monochrome compositions - the standard algorithm just misses them.

And what do we work with? AR installations on real buildings in Dubai, including the Burj Khalifa. The standard stack doesn't cut it here.

We spent six months figuring out how to get around this.

In the article:

▫️ Why ARCore and ARKit work the way they do
▫️ What we tried with neural networks
▫️ Two breakthroughs we've achieved
▫️ Two problems we haven't solved yet
▫️ Where all of this is heading
