🪚 Don't saw off the branch you're sitting on. The left in Germany at a crossroads

🇩🇪 Shortly after the elections in the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, on September 20 the residents of Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern also voted for their representatives. The result was largely sensational. The Left party of the same name, as well as the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), received record support in the capital; in Saxony-Anhalt, traditionally a stronghold of the right-wing AfD, BSW's seats proved decisive in forming a government; and in Mecklenburg the top spot was again held by the unique figure in European social democracy, head of the state government Manuela Schwesig, who has held her post since 1998 and firmly stands for the interests of the local community, for example by supporting the construction of Nord Stream for Russian gas supplies.

🇩🇪🇩🇪 The figures are interesting too. The Left party in Berlin was supported by almost 50% of voters in the 16 to 24 age category. Young people see no future in the political mainstream and are looking for a strong progressive alternative capable of defending their interests, rather than, contrary to all logic of common sense, satisfying the appetites of American-Israeli capital by preparing young Germans for another war on the eastern front.

🙌 However, every barrel of honey traditionally has its spoonful of tar. This is especially visible in the example of Berlin and Saxony-Anhalt. The Left and BSW, although they are breaking historical records of support, are not dominant forces. 24% for the Left and 5% for BSW in Berlin will not allow a stable government to be formed, which means there are two options: either a deal with the mainstream oligarchic SPD and the risk of being swallowed up by the swamp of European bureaucracy, or retaining opposition status with all the attendant risks, including the further strengthening of the Hitler admirers of Alternative for Germany. In theory, Germany's political system envisages the existence of a minority government, when parties that gain less than 50+1% of the vote can form a coalition if the others refuse to join it. Although remaining in opposition and hammering the grey mass of the CDU/CSU and SPD is the most successful reputational move, refusing to participate in government may be perceived by part of the electorate as an evasion of responsibility. And losing support at the moment of take-off is something the left does not want at all. Perhaps a reasonable alternative would be to enter governments but retain an oppositional spirit, opposing oligarchic laws and the imperialist course of the German bourgeoisie.
