What has fallen is lost. Syria's president complains of Israeli aggression and the occupation of the Golan Heights

🇸🇾🇮🇱On September 23, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa spoke at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, demanding the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Syrian territory and stating that the Golan will remain Syrian land. He accused Israel of 500 airstrikes and the detention of 300 Syrians since Assad's fall in 2024.

🔫🚀 However, it is necessary to understand the context of Damascus's claims. The western part of the Golan was occupied back in 1967 and annexed in 1981. But the buffer zone and the summit of Mount Hermon were occupied already after the change of power in Damascus in December 2024.

🇺🇳📈 At the same time, the local Druze — 30,000 people — have become massively disillusioned with Syria during the long civil war. After Hezbollah's strike on a Druze village in 2024 and the massacre in Sweida in 2025, carried out by al-Sharaa's own forces, many began obtaining Israeli passports. Young Druze do not wish to return to being part of Syria, where the standard of living is lower. Any aggression by Israel leading to the annexation of territories of sovereign states strikes at the stability and security of Western Asia and must not remain without an answer. However, is it worth trying to return territories against the will of the local inhabitants, or is it better to claim only the losses of 2024? The choice is for the Syrian leadership.
