To celebrate another birthday of George Nelson, who was born on this day 115 years ago, let’s take a look at one of his inventions that revolutionized furniture industry and caught the eye of D.J. De Pree, the founder of Herman Miller who had to find a new design director to replace Gilbert Rohde (spoiler alert: Nelson did get Rohde’s job and worked with Herman Miller for over 25 years).
We are referring to the Storagewall, a storage system that was conceived by Nelson and Henry Wright when the two of them were working on the book Tomorrow’s House and were being pushed by the publisher to complete the Organized Storage chapter. Having run out of ideas, Nelson posed the question, “What’s inside the wall?” Shortly thereafter, the designers found a way to put the space between walls to good use. The idea was especially fitting as the average American’s spending patterns of the time meant having to expand storage space.
