American designer Allan Gould (1908–1988) began his career - and first made his name - as a painter. Working in the Regionalist tradition, he favored rural subjects, often depicting farms and the surrounding countryside. In 1931, critic Edwin Alden Jewell even credited Gould with painting “the most beautiful chicken wire this reviewer has ever come upon in a gallery" (you can spot it on the left-hand side of the painting above).
And yet, the world remembers Gould primarily as an industrial designer. He studied design, taught design, and in 1941 became a practicing designer himself. Through his association with Gilbert Rohde, Gould received a commission to create a chair for Herman Miller. The result was the Compass Chair. The name was almost self-explanatory: its splayed legs resembled the arms of a drafting compass, while the curved backrest looked as though it had been drawn by that very compass.
The chair was later joined by a Compass Table, built around the same distinctive leg geometry - and, inevitably, by numerous imitations.
