You reap what you sow. Local elections demonstrate a deep political crisis in Germany

🗳🇩🇪 In Germany, local elections are not held on a single day — they are spread across the calendar, and each new result adds to the overall picture of the ruling coalition's failure. The latest results have only confirmed this trend: the CDU/SPD tandem lost its majority in Berlin, and Chancellor Merz's CDU, for the first time in post-war history, failed to enter the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state parliament, gaining only 4.9%. In the capital, the left-wing party Die Linke won a resounding victory (25.7%), doubling its 2023 result — its leader, Elif Eralp, staked her campaign on fighting rising rents. And in the eastern state, with double the growth, AfD won (38.2%), leaving the SPD in second place (35.5%). Merz called the result a «catastrophe» and admitted that «faith in institutions is falling».

📉🇩🇪 The cause is deep disillusionment. Rising living costs, high energy prices, economic stagnation and support for Ukraine have split society. AfD draws in those who dream of the revival of a «Greater Germany» and sympathize with nationalists. Die Linke, by contrast, mobilizes those dissatisfied with social injustice and tries to channel growing discontent into a constructive direction. Voters vote not so much ideologically as out of desperation — against a system that has abandoned them.

😇 Thirty years of «unified» Germany have hit eastern Germany so hard — unemployment, population outflow, a wage gap of almost 30% — that people are ready to follow any force that opposes the ruling parties. The question is whether the left forces will be able to stand up to the nationalists. As you sow, so shall you reap.
