A Weaponized Beatification?
Fulton Sheen was one of the most famous Catholic figures of the 20th century. But should Orthodox Christians simply celebrate his beatification—or should we examine what his legacy represents?
Sheen enthusiastically embraced Vatican II, ecumenism, interfaith cooperation, and an increasingly Americanized vision of Christianity. His public influence helped promote a model of Christianity deeply engaged with the cultural and political assumptions of modern America.
The question is not whether Fulton Sheen was charismatic, intelligent, or popular.
The question is what is being promoted through his beatification—and why?
From an Orthodox perspective, his legacy deserves much more careful examination, particularly when contrasted with the witness of Orthodox saints who resisted the pressure to accommodate the Church to modern culture.
