Intelligence operations have long understood that separating a person from trusted relationships can make them more dependent on new sources of information, validation, and authority. The article asks whether something resembling this dynamic can emerge when therapy encourages people to reinterpret family relationships primarily through the lens of trauma, dysfunction, boundaries, or personal autonomy.
There are certainly situations where separation from family is necessary. But there is an enormous difference between protecting someone from genuine abuse and encouraging unnecessary rupture with the people who know them best.
