As it turns out, the British artist Francis Bacon began his career as a furniture and interior designer and, had he not moved to painting, he might have become one of the key figures in charge of bringing international modernism onto the British design scene. Rarely speaking about this period, Bacon likely tried to erase it from his biography altogether as, according to his biographers, it was not compatible with his self-image of an artist he tried to create.

In 1927, when Bacon was eighteen, his father sent him to Berlin to discipline him. Instead, Bacon immersed himself into the avant-garde scene, watched ‘Battleship Potemkin’, attended cutting-edge exhibitions, and encountered the work of Bauhaus artists – all these experiences left a lasting impression on Bacon and would later reflect on his artworks. After Berlin, he spent a year and a half in Paris, where he continued to engage with the works of modernist designers, such as André Lurçat and Eileen Gray, and learn the ropes of product design.

By early 1929, Bacon had moved back to London and founded his own studio, focusing on “modern decoration”, making “furniture in metal, glass, and wood," and designing "rugs and lights" (at least, that’s what his business card claimed). His work gained recognition and was even featured by Madge Garland in the August 1930 issue of the Creative Art magazine where she praised his “individualistic variations” on the theme of steel and glass, which had a strong appeal at the time, and mentioned his rugs, but we will save those for later…
