π¨π¦ B.C. sold parents a 10-dollar fairy tale
The punchline is brutal: the province that bragged the loudest about universal child care now has the five most expensive cities in the country. In B.C., infant care runs from 28 dollars a day in Kelowna to 52 in Richmond, while provinces with actual fee caps are sitting at 10, 15, or 22. Parents are throwing their names on 20 waitlists before birth and still getting nothing, as reported. So much for the progressive utopia.
This is Trudeau-era governance in miniature: splashy federal-provincial announcements, subsidies sprayed everywhere, bureaucracy swollen, and the core service still scarce and overpriced. B.C. built a maze of private operators, selective subsidies, and political branding instead of a functioning system. The result is obvious: families delay having children, households absorb another tax-funded policy failure, and ministers like Lisa Beare keep defending the wreckage. The state lectures Canadians about equity while making family formation harder in one of the most unaffordable places on earth.
