When the family unit is under attack, marriage is an act of resistance

Naturally, the right intentions are important. First, for the sake of God. Second, a family should be built around a mission to serve God and the Islamic movement. Third, children should be seen as a means to heal the world by raising righteous people to offset the amount of corrupted people on earth.

This article presents practical advice on what to seek in a spouse and what should be kept in mind before forming a sacred bond and starting a family, which is the building block of society.

Islam — as the Qur’an explains in several places — considers the purpose behind the creation of man and woman, their coexistence, and ultimately their marriage, to be their mutual stability and tranquility.

This meaning is expressed in the noble verse: “And He created from it its pair, that he might find tranquility in her”.

The expression sakīn (tranquility) appears, as far as I recall, in two places in the Qur’an.

God, Blessed and Exalted, created a spouse for the human being from his own kind — the spouse of a woman and the spouse of a man both being of their own nature — “so that he may find tranquility in her.”

This means that a person, whether man or woman, finds inner peace beside their spouse.

This stability, tranquility, and protection from spiritual turmoil is extremely important, for the arena of life is an arena of struggle.

A human being is always vulnerable to some kind of inner disturbance.

"You're such a good brother, but you can't marry my daughter" — prejudice and marriage: the Muslim convert experience perfectly summarized by an African American Shaykh in this lighthearted, humorous, and insightful interview

Are we ready for the day when the aya "and you see the people entering Allah’s religion in throngs" (110:2) comes true?

The Qur'an and Ahlul Bayt (as) are the ark of salvation for all humanity, are we just going to keep it for ourselves in some exclusivistic club?

Yes, vet converts, put them through various smell tests to weed out the bad ones, but if they pass the vetting process, afterwards there must be equality. They must be treated as equals and brothers. Not as superior royalty where they are tokenized and their cheeks pinched like children, nor as inferior second class Muslims who should "know their place" and get the door slammed in their faces for marriage proposals solely due to race (and not due to legitimate issues).

As the Shaykh mentions in this video, the first instance of prejudice/racism was Iblis when he refused to bow to Adam (as).

For many born Muslims, prejudice along racial lines is not intentional, so the more we can be aware of our unintentional shortcomings, the better we can improve ourselves and society, and the more we can get closer to Allah by having an active faith based on understanding rather than passive inheritance.

This is not to be pessimistic but to help us see the reality so we can prepare for what is ahead: the salvation of mankind from tyranny and corruption via Imam Mahdi (aj) and Jesus Christ (a), and all these notions of prejudice will not be a part of their system, both the actual government and the culture they will instill across society.

«مَنْ تَزَوَّجَ اِمْرَأَةً وَ لَمْ يَنْوِ أَنْ يُوَفِّيَهَا صَدَاقَهَا، فَهُوَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ زَانٍ»

Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:
“Whoever marries a woman without the intention of paying her dowry (mahr), then in the sight of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, he is a fornicator.”

💡 A powerful reminder that marriage requires sincere intention and justice. Being dishonest at this stage of marriage, which is the very first step, is starting a relationship based on dishonesty. Dowry is due and payable to the wife and belongs to her, and no khums is payable on it even if a year passes by.

مَنْ أَرَادَ مِنْكُمُ التَّزْوِيجَ فَلْيُصَلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، وَ لْيَقْرَأْ فِيهِمَا فَاتِحَةَ الْكِتَابِ وَ (يس)، فَإِذَا فَرَغَ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى، وَ لْيُثْنِ عَلَيْهِ، وَ لْيَقُلْ:

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said:
Whoever among you wishes to get married, let him perform two units (rak‘ahs) of prayer and recite Surah al-Fatiha and Yā Sīn in them. After completing the prayer, let him praise and glorify Allah and then say:

"O Allah, grant me a loving, fertile, grateful, and protective wife—one who thanks me when I do good, and forgives me when I err..."

Whoever marries his noble daughter to a corrupt man—upon him descends a thousand curses every day. None of his deeds will ascend to the heavens, his prayers will not be answered, and neither obligatory nor voluntary acts will be accepted from him.

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ) فَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ الْحَاجَةَ، فَقَالَ: "تَزَوَّجْ"، فَتَزَوَّجَ، فَوُسِّعَ عَلَيْهِ.

Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) complaining of poverty. The Prophet said to him, “Get married.” So he got married—and his sustenance was expanded.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said:
A righteous woman is better than a thousand unrighteous men. And any woman who serves her husband for seven days—Allah will close seven doors of Hell to her and open eight doors of Paradise for her, and she may enter from whichever she wishes.

مَا مِنِ اِمْرَأَةٍ تَسْقِي زَوْجَهَا شَرْبَةَ مَاءٍ إِلَّا كَانَ خَيْرًا لَهَا مِنْ سَنَةٍ صِيَامٍ نَهَارُهَا وَ قِيَامٍ لَيْلِهَا، وَ بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهَا بِكُلِّ شَرْبَةٍ تَسْقِي زَوْجَهَا مَدِينَةً فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَ غُفِرَتْ لَهَا سِتُّونَ خَطِيئَةً.

“There is no woman who gives her husband a drink of water, except that it is better for her than a whole year of fasting by day and praying by night. And for every sip she gives him, Allah builds for her a city in Paradise and forgives her sixty sins.”
