CAYHIC Day 1: Recap

Ulugbek Baymuradov — From Gene to Medicine: Retracing a Cancer Drug's Discovery with AlphaFold and Free Genomics Tools

Ulugbek traced the real story of one cancer drug — trastuzumab (Herceptin) — from the discovery of the HER2 gene in 1985 all the way to today's next-generation antibody drugs, showing the free tools scientists actually use at every step along the way.

1. Breast cancer is the #1 cancer among women in all five Central Asian countries — and about 1 in 5 cases is HER2-positive, exactly the kind this drug targets.

2. There are 1,735 trastuzumab clinical trials registered worldwide — only 2 in Kazakhstan, and 0 in Uzbekistan and the other three countries.

3. Every step of drug discovery now has a free tool anyone can try: cBioPortal for genes, UniProt and AlphaFold for proteins, RCSB PDB in 3D, DepMap for cells, and ClinicalTrials.gov for real-world trials.

Ulugbek has also shared valuable materials and exciting competitions for our participants. Thank you, Ulugbek, for your contribution and support!

Welcome Mr Jason Ali to CAYHIC 2026!

Mr Ali is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Royal Papworth Hospital and an Affiliated Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge, where he also serves as Subdean for the School of Clinical Medicine. He is Co-Lead Investigator for EuroSCORE III, the internationally used cardiac surgical risk-prediction model, and has authored over 140 publications cited more than 3,000 times.

His session, "Predicting the Unpredictable: How Data Is Changing Cardiac Surgery Risk," explores how surgical risk-prediction models are built, validated, and used in real clinical decision-making — and what happens when data science meets the operating room.

Welcome Ulugbek Baymuradov to CAYHIC 2026!

Ulugbek is a computational biologist and AI engineer who builds data systems for cancer drug discovery and aging research. He previously worked as an engineer at Stanford University on the team behind the ENCODE data portal, and has also worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the New York Genome Center. He is a co-author of papers in Nature and Nature Medicine, and is originally from Uzbekistan.

His session, "From Gene to Medicine: Retracing a Cancer Drug's Discovery with AlphaFold and Free Genomics Tools," follows the real story of a cancer drug from gene discovery to clinical use — and the free tools students can use to explore that same science themselves.
