Wildfire smoke is turning summer tourism into an hour-by-hour gamble in Washington’s Chelan County. Poor air quality sent weekday foot traffic in Leavenworth plunging by 50–60% at one point, while businesses in Chelan are shifting visitors toward indoor music, children’s activities, cooking events and online shopping to soften the blow. Hotels, shops and attractions remain open, but tourism officials are urging travelers to check smoke, fire and road conditions before setting out. The visitors may return when the wind changes - for businesses built around tourism, the harder part is waiting for it to happen.
