America’s newest aircraft carriers could get a surprisingly old-school makeover, as the U.S. Navy considers major design changes to bring them closer to the World War II-era look and technology preferred by President Donald Trump. The plans could include replacing electromagnetic aircraft-launch systems with traditional steam catapults on future carriers, even as some ships are already under construction - a shift that could add major costs and delays. The broader redesign could ultimately cost billions of dollars and significantly change the Navy’s current modernization plans. For the world’s most advanced navy, the next big upgrade may involve reaching surprisingly far into the past.
