Statkevich Says All Attempts to Push Him Out of Belarus Have Failed. In a wide‑ranging conversation with DIE ZEIT, Belarusian opposition figure Mikalai Statkevich — recently released after years in prison — insisted he will not leave the country despite pressure and uncertainty around his legal status. Statkevich said authorities have neither clarified whether he was pardoned nor responded to his formal inquiries, and he believes his January stroke — triggered, he says, by denial of essential medication — prompted his release so the regime would not “carry responsibility” if he died behind bars. “For me, leaving would mean abandoning millions of Belarusians who remain here,” he noted, adding that people still stop him on the street to thank him. Statkevich argued that today’s harsh repression — “ten years in prison for a like or repost” — reflects the regime’s fear of renewed unrest: “If mass protests start again, they will not be as peaceful as in 2020.” Responding to concerns voiced by Maria Kalesnikava, he said the EU is right to stop believing “the old fairy tale that Lukashenka wants to escape Putin’s embrace,” while stressing that isolation should never apply to ordinary Belarusians, who must be able to travel and see the world beyond Belarus and Russia. Despite uncertainty about his legal status and constant pressure, Statkevich said he remains calm and determined: “I have fought for my country’s freedom for many years and will not stop halfway. Every day with my wife, seeing trees and sky again, is a gift.”
