The Grand Cascade at Peterhof is the palace and park’s most spectacular fountain feature—and one of the most famous fountain ensembles in the world. Conceived by Peter the Great as a ceremonial entrance to his imperial residence from the sea, this 300-year-old complex draws water for all 150 fountains in the Lower Park without a single pump. The flow relies entirely on the natural difference in elevation and water pressure.
The cascade is formed by two imposing flights of seven steps, joined by the Grand Grotto. Water spills down into a vast semicircular basin, which connects directly to the Gulf of Finland via the Sea Channel. The ensemble is adorned with 255 gilded bronze statues, bas-reliefs, mascarons and other decorative details, while 75 water jets send streams soaring into the air at once.
