Ludwig Knaus
“Cat Mother,” 1856

One of the finest artists of the New Düsseldorf School, Knaus beautifully captures this woman’s affection for her cats. Judging by the cheeky look on the upper cat’s face, it has just torn up the book she was hoping to read. But what can you expect from a cat? Slightly annoyed by the ruined book and interrupted reading, she sits calmly, stroking her other feline companion.
