Douglas Crockwell’s “Picnic in the Rain” (1953) is a vivid original created for Morton Salt. A couple takes shelter from the downpour beneath a wooden awning as the man sprinkles salt on celery—a demonstration that it won’t clump, even in damp weather.

In mid-20th-century America, high-quality color photography was hard to come by, so major brands hired professional illustrators to create artwork for magazine ads.

The slogan drives home the point: even in the rain, Morton Salt pours freely.
