Artist Brett Kern creates remarkably detailed ceramic sculptures that look almost exactly like inflatable rubber toys at first glance.

He captures the folds and contours of air-filled inflatables, but every piece is made entirely of clay.

In the late 19th century, laundry work could be a death sentence. Abram Arkhipovโ€™s celebrated painting The Laundresses (1890s) depicts women laboring by hand up to 14 hours a day amid suffocating steam and caustic soap that damaged their skin. After visiting a laundry near Moscowโ€™s Smolensky Market, Arkhipov developed the idea over several years. He rendered the older women in painstaking detail, their backs bent and faces etched with despairโ€”a bleak portrait of lives spent beneath piles of othersโ€™ dirty clothes.

The younger laundresses, by contrast, are faceless silhouettes near the light. The older women swallowed by darkness and the girls bathed in sunlight suggest more than a play of shadows: they symbolize hope. Their story remains unfinished; these young women may yet escape the punishing routine and shape a different future.

Gustave Courbet
*Desperation: Self-Portrait*, 1845

A young man asked a wise man, โ€œHow do I succeed in life?โ€

The wise man led him into a deep pond and held his head underwater. The young man struggled until he finally broke free, surfaced, and gasped for air.

โ€œWhat did you want most underwater?โ€ asked the wise man.

โ€œTo breathe!โ€

โ€œNot wealth, fame, or new clothes?โ€

โ€œNo. Just air.โ€

The wise man smiled. โ€œThat is true desire. When you want success as desperately as you wanted that breath, youโ€™ll achieve it. Until then, itโ€™s only a passing wish.โ€

A wonder above the abyss: Las Lajas Sanctuary

In Colombia, amid the rugged cliffs of the Guรกitara River canyon, stands the extraordinary neo-Gothic Las Lajas Sanctuary. Built in the first half of the 20th century, the church rises from a bridge nearly 100 meters above the gorge. Its stone walls seem to grow straight out of the cliffs, creating a breathtaking sight where architecture and nature meet. Pilgrims and travelers from around the world come to see it for themselves.

The sanctuaryโ€™s most remarkable feature is its altar, set against the natural rock inside the cave. A centuries-old image of the Virgin Mary, painted by unknown artists during the colonial era, adorns the stone wall. After dark, colorful lights illuminate the sanctuary, giving it the air of a medieval fairy tale nestled in the mountains of South America.

Heidi Tailleferโ€™s 2015 painting *Silkworm* is a striking work of surrealism.

At its center stands a white horse, its body woven from threads, shells, and gears to form a biomechanical cocoon. Surrounded by a flock of pigeons, the horse suggests the soulโ€™s passage into another world. Blending mythology with steampunk aesthetics, the painting earned Taillefer the prestigious Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize.

A moment frozen in time:
Yegor Zaitsevโ€™s *First Summer* (2002)

This painting seems to bring time to a standstill, drawing us into a world of perfect calm. At its heart is a tender scene: a mother gently feeding her child. Through the open window, a white-stone village church rises above a garden thick with greenery, where apples are ripening in the August sun. On the windowsill, simple clay jugs hold generous bouquets of wildflowers and golden wheat. Thereโ€™s no rush hereโ€”only warm sunlight and the feeling that, for this moment, the whole world is just a mother and her baby.

Nikolay Makovsky
โ€œOut in the Provinces,โ€ 1880s

This painting seems to hold the sound of summer. Makovskyโ€™s work feels scented not with paint, but with warm earth, freshly cut grass, and sun-baked wood. Look closely: there are no palaces or grand dramas here. Just an ordinary village yard, children at play, wooden houses, church domes bright in the distance, and a vast sky heavy with clouds.

Makovsky doesnโ€™t romanticize Russia. He shows it as quiet, modest, and alive. Thereโ€™s no grand gesture, just a powerful sense of homeโ€”a place you long to return to, even if youโ€™ve never been there.

You can almost imagine the mistress of the house stepping through the gate, the children racing down the dusty road, and bells ringing out over the river. Some paintings are simply beautiful to look at. Others make you wish you could step inside.

Ever feel as though burnout has pushed you to the edge? Take a look at Ivan Aivazovskyโ€™s 1889 masterpiece, *Surf by a Rocky Shore*. Already in his seventies, Russiaโ€™s foremost marine painter deliberately turned away from his signature blazing sunsets. Instead, he gives us a tightly controlled drama in muted silver and gray. Heavy waves crash against solid cliffs, breaking into crystal-white foam.

For anyone worn down by the noise and pressure of everyday life, this painting offers a moment of calm. Aivazovsky captures more than a storm: he shows the strength it takes to hold steady when everything around you seems to be collapsing.

Which mood do you prefer: introspective Russian realism or elegant French Rococo? Cast your vote! ๐Ÿฑ๐ŸŽจ

Two very different takes on relaxing in the company of a furry friend:

๐Ÿ‘ Ivan Kramskoy, *Girl with a Cat* (1882)
A thoughtful, psychologically rich portrait. Lost in her thoughts, the young woman sits beside a grey cat, whose presence brings a touch of domestic warmth and gentle melancholy.

โค๏ธ Jean-Franรงois Colson, *Rest* (1759)
An elegant French scene with a hidden meaning. As the young woman sleeps, a calico cat edges toward a little birdโ€”a reference to maidenly innocence in the 18th century.

Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526โ€“1593) made his name as a Mannerist master with portraits built from unexpected objects.

His faces emerge from fruit, fish, books, and tableware. Some paintings are visual puzzles: turn them upside down, and an ordinary still life becomes a portrait. Arcimboldoโ€™s work lets imagination take the lead over reality.

Vincent van Gogh
*Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe*, 1889

Van Goghโ€™s ear: madness or a desperate act of emotional blackmail?

To others, self-mutilation may seem like madness. For Van Gogh, it was an unconscious cry for help.

On December 23, 1888, his friend and artistic partner, Paul Gauguin, planned to leave their studio, ending their shared venture. Theo, Vincentโ€™s brother and financial supporter, had refused to fund it without Gauguin. That day, Vincent learned Theo was getting married. He feared losing both Theoโ€™s support and their close bond.

Facing isolation and poverty, Van Gogh suffered a psychological crisis. Cutting off his ear may have drowned out his anguish and made the world notice his pain.

When Theo heard, he rushed from Paris to the hospital. Vincent received the care he sought: Theo reaffirmed his love and promised continued financial support.

A bird saving a man?

The sculpture "Transฤซre" by Norwegian artist Fredrik Raddum looks like a scene from a dream, yet carries a harsh reality. Created in 2017 for the Brandstrup Gallery in Oslo, this artwork has since traveled between exhibitions and private collections, occasionally reappearing on the streets of Norwegian citiesโ€”Bergen among them.

A tiny bird strains upward, gripping the manโ€™s shirt in its beak, pulling him from a face-down fall. The bronze fabric stretches taut under his weight, creating a powerful illusion of struggle against gravity.

Beneath this image lies the drama of migrationโ€”a metaphor for helplessness and fragile hope. When the world turns its back, salvation may come from the smallest and most vulnerable of beings. Learn more #MigrationArt #Sculpture #Hope #Humanity #ArtWithMessage
