Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526–1593) made his name as a Mannerist master with portraits built from unexpected objects.

His faces emerge from fruit, fish, books, and tableware. Some paintings are visual puzzles: turn them upside down, and an ordinary still life becomes a portrait. Arcimboldo’s work lets imagination take the lead over reality.
