A wonder above the abyss: Las Lajas Sanctuary
In Colombia, amid the rugged cliffs of the Guáitara River canyon, stands the extraordinary neo-Gothic Las Lajas Sanctuary. Built in the first half of the 20th century, the church rises from a bridge nearly 100 meters above the gorge. Its stone walls seem to grow straight out of the cliffs, creating a breathtaking sight where architecture and nature meet. Pilgrims and travelers from around the world come to see it for themselves.
The sanctuary’s most remarkable feature is its altar, set against the natural rock inside the cave. A centuries-old image of the Virgin Mary, painted by unknown artists during the colonial era, adorns the stone wall. After dark, colorful lights illuminate the sanctuary, giving it the air of a medieval fairy tale nestled in the mountains of South America.
