🛰 Soviet Venus Probe From 1972 Returns to Earth

A Soviet Venus probe, Kosmos 482, stranded in Earth orbit after a 1972 launch failure, is expected to make an uncontrolled reentry around May 8-10, 2025, after 53 years in space. Built to withstand Venus' harsh conditions, parts of the probe may survive hitting the atmosphere and impacting Earth at speeds up to 150 mph.

Experts note, however, that the risk to populated areas is minimal.

🚘 Millions of AirPlay Devices Are Hackable Over CarPlay and Wi-Fi

As security researchers reported, a critical set of security vulnerabilities dubbed "AirBorne" has exposed over 2.35 billion active Apple and third-party devices using AirPlay and CarPlay to potential hacking over Wi-Fi networks.

Attackers can exploit these vulnerabilities to achieve zero-click or one-click remote code execution. In other words, they could hijack certain AirPlay-enabled devices without needing to interact with the user.

Experts recommend immediately installing the latest updates for all Apple and AirPlay-enabled devices.

🐤 Duolingo Will Replace Contractors With AI

Duolingo has announced plans to become an "AI-first" company. CEO Luis von Ahn wrote in a company-wide email that the language learning platform will gradually phase out contract workers in favor of AI for tasks that can be automated. In January 2024, the company already decided to cut 10% of its contractors as it began using AI for content generation.

Critics have raised concerns about the quality and reliability of AI-generated educational content. While von Ahn acknowledged potential "occasional small hits on quality," questions remain about how effectively automated systems can replace human judgment in language education.

♊️ Gemini Is Growing Quickly, But Still Trails Behind the Leaders

Google's Gemini now has about 350 million monthly and 35 million daily users. That's almost four times its October 2024 level, when only 9 million people used it daily. Still, Google is far from its biggest rivals: OpenAI with ChatGPT and Meta AI services.

ChatGPT also engages people better: 600 million people use it monthly and 160 million every day (compared with Gemini's 35 million).

☣️ AI Outsmarts Virus Experts, Raising Biohazard Fears

A study from the Center for AI Safety and SecureBio shows top chatbots now beat PhD virologists at lab problem-solving, raising both hopes for faster research and fears of misuse.

On the 322-question Virology Capabilities Test, OpenAI's o3 answered 43.8 % correctly, nearly doubling the human average of 22.1 %. Moreover, o3 performed better on the test than 95% of test-takers; Claude 3.5 Sonnet beats 75% of humans.

Because these skills could be weaponized, the authors urge limiting public access and adding strict "know-your-customer" checks.

🇦🇪 UAE Adopts AI to Draft Laws

The United Arab Emirates is pioneering a new approach to governance, becoming the first nation to use artificial intelligence for drafting and updating legislation. Officials say the system could cut the law‑making timeline by as much as 70% while tracking the day‑to‑day impact of regulations on citizens and the economy.

A newly created, government‑run office will oversee the project. Its AI tools will monitor the effects of new laws, flag outdated or conflicting rules, conduct detailed analyses, and translate legal texts into multiple languages.

🤩 Lab‑Grown Teeth Could Replace Implants

Scientists at King's College London have grown human teeth in the lab using a special hydrogel scaffold. This breakthrough in regenerative dentistry could one day let you replace fillings and implants with living, self‑repairing teeth made from your cells.

Lab‑grown teeth have significant benefits over today's metal or ceramic implants. Because they're made from living tissue, they can mend small cracks and wear themselves over time. By using their own cells, doctors could avoid many rejection problems. Instead of drilling and inserting hard fillings, a dentist might transplant the patient's tooth cells into the gel and watch a brand‑new, natural tooth grow.

⛔️ Trump May Ban DeepSeek in the U.S.

Reports suggest that the Trump administration may soon block Americans from using AI models built by the Chinese lab DeepSeek. Officials are also weighing measures to stop the company from buying U.S. technology—such as Nvidia’s AI chips—over national security concerns.

DeepSeek is already restricted in several countries: Canada, Australia, South Korea, and Taiwan have barred the service on government devices, and Italy has imposed a nationwide ban.

👐 OpenAI Introduces o3 & o4‑mini: Next‑Gen AI Models with Superior Reasoning and Tool Skills

OpenAI has made a new breakthrough with the announcement of the o3 and o4-mini models, the smartest and most powerful models to date.

The president of OpenAI Greg Brockman compares their release to the leap in progress the company made with GPT-4 two years ago: "And the thing that's really amazing about these models is that they're not just models, they're really AI systems. We've trained them to use tools, which is not something that we had done with our previous reasoning models."

What's New:

➡️ Record-breaking performance. The models show unprecedented results in math, coding, and scientific knowledge benchmarks. While Gemini 2.5 Pro might compete with o4-mini in some tests, only OpenAI's Deep Research rivals the tool-using o3.

➡️ On the Codeforces platform, both models score over 2700 ELO points, which is equal to the ranking of the top 200 coders in the world.

➡️ Models think with images, not just chains of sentences. For example, they can rotate or zoom in on an image during response generation to study it better, use Python for calculations and data analysis, and apply other tools.

➡️ The models reason deeper, make fewer errors, and avoid hallucinations better.
