Researchers developed a noninvasive method to identify senescent “zombie cells” using Raman microscopy combined with single-cell gene expression data. The approach revealed distinctive molecular barcodes, including changes in lipid metabolism, that allowed senescent cells to be detected without destroying them. The method could eventually support diagnostics for aging-related diseases and help evaluate therapies targeting cellular senescence.
