Researchers demonstrated a way to protect quantum information using mechanical vibrations, or phonons, instead of microwave pulses. By continuously driving a silicon-vacancy spin in diamond with sound waves, they created a “dressed” qubit less sensitive to environmental noise and extended its coherence time by about threefold. The same phonons could therefore both carry quantum information and protect it in future chip-scale quantum networks.
