Researchers discovered how some molecular crystals can bend and expand without breaking. Inside the crystals, neighboring molecules act like interconnected “scissors” that open and close in a coordinated way to absorb strain. Crystals with a balanced range of this motion showed large elastic bending and light-driven deformation, while structures already near fully open or closed states were more brittle.
