Researchers found that an experimental Zika vaccine can protect mice through CD8+ T cells even when antibodies provide no protection. A modified vaccine designed to reduce antibody-dependent enhancement relied entirely on T-cell immunity, but protection disappeared within 12 weeks. The findings suggest future Zika and related flavivirus vaccines may need to generate durable T-cell responses alongside safer antibody immunity.
