Researchers assembled near-complete genomes of eight Myotis bat species and found that evolutionary adaptations to viral defense overlap with genes involved in DNA repair, longevity, and cancer resistance. The study identified unique immune gene copy-number expansions (including PKR) that enhance antiviral responses and damaged-cell elimination, suggesting that bats' exceptional lifespan and low cancer rates may arise from shared genetic mechanisms connecting immunity, aging, and genome maintenance.
