These two vanity sets, dating back to 1934 and 1939, respectively, showcase Rohde’s ability to bridge modernity and tradition by offering his customers a modern and functional piece whose forms and materials wouldn’t be too revolutionary (or too minimalistic, if we may) and innovative for middle-class taste. The combination of materials is just one of Rohde’s means to this end; he expertly combines traditional rosewood with brand-new plexiglass (or poplar with Bauhaus-inspired tubular steel and bakelite, as in the previous set).
All in all, both of these sets illustrate Rohde’s firm belief that “Modern furniture is our expression of the ancient and simple desire to make beautiful and useful things, suited to their purpose and to the tools and materials available.”
