"I find a place for everything. Which means for 40 bloody years or so I’ve been here all winter designing houses that people will use in the summer. The huge amount of work this requires means that I have a great difficulty thinking of them in any other way than physically."

Even if we managed to reach Sardinia these days, finding the works of the Italian architect Alberto Ponis (1933–2024) would not be easy: his buildings are exceptionally well camouflaged within the rocky landscape. Born in Genoa, educated in Florence, and having worked with Ernő Goldfinger in London, Ponis returned to Italy in 1963. Since then he designed more than 300 residential houses on Sardinia alone - projects that could easily illustrate a handbook on organic modernism or, recalling Kenneth Frampton, on critical regionalism.

One of them is the Hartley House, built in 1970 on an isthmus between two rocky peaks that conceal the dwelling from view. Fortunately, the plans of the house are available online and allow us to study the architect’s concept. Seen from above, the building forms a sector, with rooms radiating outward in concentric arcs from the center, like waves from a radio mast. Viewed from the side, however, it becomes clear that the spaces also unfold across different levels, following the natural contours of the terrain.
