Our colleagues have kindly reminded us here and here that last week marked the 100th anniversary of the famous Paris Exhibition that gave rise to Art Deco, so let's take a small coffee break from our Monday anecdotes about espresso machines and soak up the vibe of late Art Deco by taking a peek into an espresso bar (or better yet ‘Espresso Bar’) that functioned on the premises of the 1930 Austrian Werkbund exhibition in Vienna and was designed by Vienna-based Felix Augenfeld and Karl Hoffman.

Designing this coffee spot as a gesamtkunstwerk, the architects were responsible for everything, from the overall interior to individual pieces of furniture, such as this two-tone chair, which is almost identical to the Mundus Chair produced by Thonet in Czechoslovakia in the 1920s. As we have mentioned already, vertical coffee machines hindered communication between customers and baristas, so Augenfeld and Hofmann thoughtfully placed the machine at the center of the counter, with a waste receptacle (probably shared by both the barista and customer) underneath, while bar stools were thus arranged on either side of the machine.

P.S. San Sanych, Telegram’s one and only expert on all things Thonet, confirms that the two chairs are identical, “When Viennese chairs became a mass-produced commodity, Thonet’s competitors would copy them without hesitation – they would even use the same model numbers. Later, they realized they needed to differentiate themselves and began developing their own product lines.”

P.P.S. If you are keen on exploring the interiors of other coffee venues of the time, check out the comments down below – we have posted a few photos of two Gunnar Asplund-designed restaurants that operated during the Stockholm Exhibition the same year.
