The opening pictures show the Faemina, yet another coffee-making contraption that claims to be world’s first domestic espresso machine. Released by Faema in 1952, shortly after Gaggia had presented its Gilda, this coffee maker was in fact produced in 1950, albeit in a limited number of copies and without a name. Unlike its primary competitor, the Faemina had a tension spring and the user only had to push the lever and the machine would do the extraction. The price tag for this automation was quite hefty, though – the Faemina cost over 40,000 liras!
Those with a tighter budget could opt for a 5,000-liras machine, also available from Faema starting from 1956. Just as innovative, this machine, which is actually the main subject of this chapter, was fully manual and required the user to boil some water, pre-heat the portafilter in it, add coffee and water, and pull the two levers down for one or even two cups of espresso. The simplicity of the process was referenced in both the name of this model, Faemina Baby, and the comic book with instructions that came with the machine.
