Aqueduct, the Story of Water • Directed by Hadi Afarideh • 2021 • Iran

This short documentary focuses on the aqueducts that were developed and later improved by Iranians in the arid regions of Persia. The film shows the importance of using aqueducts to carry fresh water over several kilometers, allowing farmers to survive long-lasting droughts. The film is filled with images of tranquil nature such as beautiful and peaceful meadows and flowing rivers. Although live aqueducts in Iran were registered as cultural heritage sites by UNESCO, sadly one thousand aqueducts go dry every year.

Radiograph of a Family • Directed by Firouzeh Khosrovani • 2020 • Iran
(Available in the UK, US, and Canada)

Radiograph of a Family chronicles the life of Firouzeh Khosrovani, the daughter of a secular father and a devout Muslim mother who coexist under one roof in Tehran. When the Islamic Revolution took place, it affected every facet of their family life. Torn between two worlds, Khosravani found herself caught in the middle of her mother’s rigid religious practices and her father’s progressive-minded lifestyle. In a way, this relationship mirrors the history of contemporary Iran and the country’s oscillation between tradition and assimilation.
Khosravani delicately weaves together her family history, beginning pre-revolution and continuing post-revolution, making use of archival footage, old letters read aloud, family photos, and voice over. In the hands of Khosrovani , irreconcilable differences, tension, the country’s divided society, and unanswered questions become the ingredients for revolutionary cinema.

Water Lorry • Directed by Hadi Afarideh • 2021 • Iran

Set in Sistan and Baluchistan Province and narrated by residents of the local villages, Water Lorry shows the difficult lives of those who face severe drought. Due to the lack of water, people go to lakes to wash their clothes and retrieve the water they need. Small children often play along the water’s edge, and in one scene a young girl shyly looks into the camera and tells the story of when she was attacked by a crocodile and lost a hand. The second half of the film focuses on teaching adults and children about crocodiles and where in the lakes these animals might appear. Afarideh effectively structures a narrative in which he links the drought to unfortunate incidents that could occur as a result.

Baluchi Garden • Directed by Hadi Afarideh • 2021 • Iran

Centering on Sistan and Baluchistan Province in southeastern Iran, where most people are farmers, 68% of the villages lack tap water. Due to the drought, there are no available jobs or sources of income, so most of the villagers have been forced to migrate to other towns, leaving the villages vacant and devoid of life. Despite the drought and lack of people, each frame is mesmerizing, capturing the spectacular landscapes and the animals wandering through meadows and up and down dirt roads. This documentary’s piercing potency is eye-opening and calls attention to drought and its ramifications.

Qelich • Directed by Pouria Nouri • 2021 • Iran

This documentary centers on the life of Vahid Qelich, a former goalkeeper for Iran’s national football team and coach of the Persepolis Football Club. Though the majority of the film is an intimate interview with Qelich, this documentary may also be seen as a textured "memory piece" in which viewers rewatch Qelich’s time as a goalkeeper and his coaching years, during which time he was known for his sarcastic strictness. Eventually, Qelich was pushed out of football and lost his fame. After years of isolation, dejection, and poverty he regained his popularity, this time not through football but instead in the virtual world, posting Instagram videos and humorous clips about everyday topics.

Beyond the Fence • Directed by Arman Gholipour Dashtaki • 2018 • Iran

This short documentary follows a young girl named Behnaz, who arduously trains to become a professional footballer. The film is filled with moments of intimacy between Behnaz and her family, as well as humorous dialogue. It also captures Behnaz’s strenuous training sessions, in which she practices and prepares to become a professional player. But when she is given an opportunity to go to a bigger city to train and compete, her father does not permit it.
Dashtaki captures an unforgettable character who is bold enough to stand up for her passion, although she is ultimately unable to win out against the cultural stigma and the gender discrimination directed toward her.
