Plane Grove • Directed by Hadi Afarideh • Iran

This documentary tells the story of 17-kilometer long Vali Asr Street, which connects Railway Square in the south of Tehran to the cold and mountainous region of Tajrish Square in the north. The film is narrated by Nava Tavakkolimehr, an architect and urban planner. Tavakkolimehr travels through the city, from Azeri Teahouse in the south up to the north, interviewing people. She aims to investigate how the collective memory constructs urban spaces. Individuals like Morteza Ahmadi, an actor and singer of Tehrani folkloric songs; Houri E’tesam, a long-time resident of the Amiriyeh District; and others narrate their own memories of Vali Asr Street and its surrounding neighborhoods, making use of collective memories as well. In this arrestingly structured documentary, Afarideh paints a haunting picture of Vali Asr Street that leaves a lasting impact on viewers.

The Story of Gordafarid • Directed by Hadi Afarideh • Iran

Naqali is a traditional form of storytelling in which a man tells epic stories about the kings and warriors of Iran. This art has long been forbidden to women. The Story of Gordafarid follows Fateme Habibi-Zade, a woman pioneer in Naqali who goes against the status quo to become the first female naqal. The role she narrates is that of Gordafarid (which becomes her nickname), a very wise and intelligent woman in the Shahnameh (The Book of Kings) whose keen reasoning overrules her emotions. This documentary paints a powerful picture of a woman whose audacious character leaves a lasting impression on every viewer. She triumphed in a male-dominated arena and proved that the gender binary leads to nothing but discrimination.

Our Times • Directed by Rakhshan Banietemad • 2001 • Iran

While the first half of Rakhshan Banietemad’s Our Times centers on the people, mostly youths, involved in Iran’s 2001 presidential election, the second half of the film focuses on Arezu Bayat, a twice-divorced single mother who decides to run for president. In this provocative documentary, Arezu boldly challenges the norms set by her society and strives to create a life for herself and her family under the patriarchy. Despite a continuous string of trials, Arezu continues to rebel against gender inequality.
Banietemad takes images that have historically been associated with womanhood — such as folding clothes, making the bed, and preparing food -- and replaces them with the image of a woman who fights for freedom, gender equality, and women empowerment. Arezu becomes the real driving force of the film, and with her fiercely determined character she subverts and complicates the socially constructed definition of women.

Iranian Journey • Directed by Maysoon Pachachi • 2000 • Germany/Iran/United Kingdom

Iranian Journey is a documentary road movie with Massoumeh Soltan Baloghie, the first woman long-distance bus driver in Iran and, probably, the whole Islamic world. On a 22-hour bus trip north to south across Iran from Tehran to Bandar Abbas, Massoumeh talks about her life and aspirations. Her passengers chat, eat, sleep and tell their stories, and we meet people in the road stop cafés, on the sides of the road and in the cities en route. In Tehran, we speak to women of different ages and classes about their work, life and aspirations – a painter, a musician, TV factory workers, law students, editor of a feminist magazine and many others including Masoumeh’s 2 teenage daughters, Zahra and Fatima.

Divorce Iranian Style • Directed by Kim Longinotto & Ziba Mir-Hosseini • 1998 • Iran/United Kingdom

Winner of the Robert Flaherty Documentary Award at the BAFTA Film Awards, Divorce Iranian Style follows helpless Iranian women seeking divorce in a country where women face strong opposition and unfair judgement from their husbands and judges. The court becomes a battlefield, in which women fight for their rights and lives. Following these women through the hallways of the courthouse, the film examines the multi-layered and complicated realities of women’s lives and shows these fierce, justice-driven women to be the real driving force of the film.
By placing the camera in the judge’s seat, the film focuses on the true cost of this chaos and gives unbiased insight into the turmoils of unhappy relationships and the heated conflicts that take place in a country where those who fight for equality and the patriarchy are constantly at odds.
In Persian with English Subtitles

TEHRAN COLLECTION: Blue Barrier• Directed by Farzaneh Bahrami & Tara Kaboli • Iran

Blue Barrier takes a look at the architecture of Tehran and investigates the relationship between the city and its highways and bridges and how they affect people’s lives and social unrest.

By weaving together interviews with urban planners, architects, drivers stuck in traffic, and city officials, Bahrami and Kaboli reveal the contrast between urban infrastructure and citizen behavior. While some people criticize the building of bridges and highways because of the traffic and air and noise pollution they produce, others celebrate the convenience of having personal cars and the abundance of “beautiful” and modern bridges. However, what cannot be overlooked is the loss of urban beauty and the city’s transformation into a toxic, polluted, and amorphous entity.
