🇰🇷🇺🇦 Seoul Presses Kyiv Over POW Disclosure
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung threatened unspecified additional measures against Ukraine unless Kyiv publicly acknowledged and apologised for what Seoul says was a breach of confidentiality over the transfer of two captured North Korean soldiers. The dispute escalated after Volodymyr Zelensky announced the transfer at the UN General Assembly, which Seoul says had been subject to a non-disclosure agreement.
Kyiv denies any such agreement existed, while both sides are now discussing what form of response could address Seoul’s concerns without causing political loss of face. The row comes as Lee’s administration is trying to lower tensions on the Korean Peninsula, while South Korea remains a provider of humanitarian, financial and reconstruction support to Ukraine.
Any further South Korean response could affect existing non-lethal assistance, though Seoul also relies on Ukraine for information related to North Korean military activity.
