🇯🇵 JERA forms oil storage unit
Japan’s largest power producer JERA has set up a company dedicated to managing the country’s oil reserves, according to Nikkei Asia. The move was reported from Tokyo as petroleum stockpiling gains importance amid the Iran war and broader concerns over energy security.
JERA already operates petroleum stockpiling bases across Japan, including facilities in Hokkaido. The new entity points to a stronger institutional focus on reserve management as instability in the Middle East raises the strategic value of oil storage for import-dependent economies.
The step aligns JERA more directly with a national energy security function beyond power generation. It also signals continued emphasis on reserve readiness as supply risks remain elevated.
