The story of Dean and Cindy, who, when they met, believed they had found the person they would spend their whole lives with, only to discover several years later that they were standing on the wreckage of their marriage on opposite sides of the barricades. At the beginning of their relationship, everything seems simple and natural: a chance meeting, falling in love, building a life together and having a daughter. But gradually, exhaustion and resentment over unfulfilled expectations accumulate between them. Cianfrance tells the story non-linearly, contrasting a happy beginning with a painful present: the same person can be the love of your life and, at the same time, someone you can no longer bear to stay beside.
