Can we live without plastic? 😅

Hello everyone! Welcome back to our segment “Mind Sparks”, where we discuss various topics about things that surround us nowadays. Today, we will explore why, despite knowing the damage, breaking up with plastic feels almost impossible. The reason behind stands for a century-long design revolution that changed the world. It eventually turned into the stage when plastic became an inevitable part of our everyday lives!

⭐Now, if you want to buy something without plastic and eco-friendly, you have to find it beforehand and pay more sometimes. That is why many of us still use plastic. Why? It is cheap, flexible, and durable. But what are the consequences of our love for plastic?

😆“Plastic is fantastic”
This phrase became commonly used in the 1950s when mass-produced plastic items commenced integrating into our daily life. After decades, it eventually became the top material for everything even if you use the product only once. Why did it happen? Initially, it should have been an option to preserve natural resources and be an alternative. Only now the world has realized the massive aftermath of pollution as this material, unlike a paper bag as an instance, does not biodegrade

😆People suffer hiddenly
You may certainly have read those articles about the negative consequences for the environment such as climate change and unsightly bottles and bags clogging beaches. However, a threat is closer than you think. There are microbeads that you can’t see but those tiny plastics are everywhere: not only in oceans, but in our food and our bodies

😆Light in the dark
Nature still doesn’t know how to deal with plastic as it is synthetic and made by combining manmade chemicals. However, it is starting to fight back with plastic-eating microbes, but they are few and far between. So the genuine solution for this problem is to reduce plastic production instead of permanent recycling

Such a step for a world tied with a plastic system is definitely hard but crucial, that is why we are slowly coming to understand that plastic was never an option to preserve those limited natural resources but became an actual threat for the future 😊

🧐Vocabulary notes:
Single-use plastics - plastic products which are designed to be used just once, before being thrown away
Microbeads - tiny plastic particles found in products like toothpastes and body scrubs, which can enter and pollute rivers, seas and the human body
Synthetic - a non-natural material made by combining chemicals
To biodegrade - to decay naturally in a way that is not harmful to the environment
Few and far between - very rare or not happening very often
Unsightly - ugly and unpleasant to look at

Word of the day: Freshness 💨

🌬In Vladivostok, February truly breathes: the prickly, frosty, burning freshness of the air by the sea, when the wind from the bay tingles your cheeks and brings a clearness that makes your head spin. Today we will learn how this freshness is described in other languages of the world!

I breathed in the fresh air from the sea this morning

In Brazil, where it is mostly warm, fresh air is often associated with the sea breeze on the coast — a moment of relief from the heat when the salty wind brings lightness and clearness. The word “fresco” conveys a feeling of coolness and renewal, like a breath of life after a long heat wave

🇦🇪 Arabic: هواء منعش (Hawa' mune'ish)
(Uhibbu hawa' mune'ish al-bahar fi ash-shita')
I love the refreshing sea air in winter

In Arab culture, freshness is often associated with “منعش” - something that invigorates and restores strength, especially in the context of a sea breeze or a cool wind after the desert heat. This word conveys a feeling of vitality, purity, and a slight chill that comes in sharp contrast with the usual warmth, reminding us of the mercy of nature

The fresh, cool air from the sea makes me invigorated

In Vietnam, especially in the north where winters are cool, “tươi mát” describes a clean, refreshing coolness—like the air after rain or by the sea, full of life and clarity. It is a feeling of recovery and renewal, close to nature, where freshness helps you wake up and feel in harmony with the world around you

1️⃣ О злом духе из якутской мифологии и почему люди ждут январь, чтобы узнать свое будущее;
2️⃣ Куда стоит отправиться, чтобы увидеть уникальную природу Якутии;

🎙 Our fifth episode of «5 Minutes of the City»
Let’s welcome our guest — Sasha from Yakutsk — to our segment about cities through the eyes of local residents!

😆We usually think of Yakutsk as the capital of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the coldest city in the world. We all know that in winter the temperature here can drop to −50 degrees Celsius and even lower, and that permafrost is not just a term from a textbook, but a real part of everyday life. But today Sasha will show Yakutsk from a different perspective — as the city where she was born and which is connected to her warmest memories!

🤭 Did you know that even in summer you can see permafrost in the surroundings of Yakutsk and take stunning photos?

But that’s just a small part — in our podcast you’ll learn:
1️⃣ About an evil spirit from Yakut mythology and why people wait for January to find out their future;
2️⃣ Where to go to see the unique nature of Yakutia;
3️⃣ Which holiday is considered the second New Year — and much more!

📖 Anoche hubo heladas en el campo

Oh puhtee mahten oon feen zhehlay arzhahntay luh twa

Word of the day: Frost 🥶

In Vladivostok, the winter months are known for their freezing days. Winter here isn't just about temperature dropping below zero but also about atmospheric phenomena, one of which is frost. So today, let's take a look at how this frosty word sounds in other languages around the world!

(Kesa wa shimo ga furimashita)
There were frosts this morning

The character, which means frost, is visually and phonetically minimalistic, precise, and carries the entire aesthetics of wabi-sabi (the beauty of short life and simplicity). The word is short, sonorous, and associated with morning silence and fragile beauty

🇪🇸 Spanish: las heladas (las eˈlaðas)
📖 Anoche hubo heladas en el campo

There were frosts in the countryside last night

It sounds passionate, like many words in Spanish. The word seems to warm you up, despite its cold meaning

(O puit mahten oon feen zhehlay arzhahntay luh twa)
At dawn, a light frost silvered the roof

It sounds elegant and soft, almost like a jelly. There's a hint of something transparent, fragile, and temporary

In Portugal, there are plans to open a reserve that will accept elephants from circuses and zoos 🐘

⭐As many European countries are banning the usage of animals in circuses, there is an issue with the following care of animals who have lived in captivity. That's why Portugal wants to open a reserve where elephants will live freely in natural conditions and be under veterinary inspection

⭐The reserve will be named «Pangaea» after the non-commercial organisation that is implementing the project. However, Portugal was not chosen by chance: research across Europe showed that the Portugal's climate is suitable for elephant habitats, and the terrain in the Alentejo region, where the reserve will be located, has convenient hills; moreover, according to National Geographic, elephants inhabited this region 100,000 years ago

The opening of such a reserve is a crucial step not only for saving individual animals but also for creating a new model of humane treatment for them! ❤️

📖 Jeg elsker hygge ved pejsen om aftenen

📖 Wat een gezelligheid hier vanavond!

📖 Hier herrscht echte Gemütlichkeit

Word of the Day: Coziness
🏡

In Vladivostok January always arrives with an icy breath: -20°C, a piercing wind from the sea and snow that lashes your face. On evenings like these you especially want to get under a warm blanket, turn on a lamp, and feel the world outside the window get quieter. There are words that embrace the soul, and «coziness» is one of the most tender among them.
Let's find out how this wonderful word sounds in other languages 🤩

🇩🇰 Danish: Hygge [ˈhʊɡ.ə]
📖 Jeg elsker hygge ved pejsen om aftenen

(yai el-skuh ˈhʊɡ.ə veh pie-sen ohm af-teh-nen)
I love a cozy feeling by the fireplace in the evenings

In Denmark "Hygge" is a whole philosophy of small joys: candles, warm socks, good company and a feeling that everything in the world is in its right place. The word became a true symbol of Danish happiness and was even included in the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017

🇱🇺 Dutch: Gezelligheid
[ɣəˈzɛ.lɪɣˌɦɛit]
📖 Wat een gezelligheid hier vanavond!

(vat ayn ɣəˈzɛ.lɪɣˌɦɛit heer vah-nah-vont)
What a cozy atmosphere here tonight!

In the Netherlands, this word reflects the warmth that arises among friends in a small cafe or at home around a big long table. It's when everyone simply feels good being together

🇩🇪 German: Gemütlichkeit
[ɡəˈmyːtlɪçkaɪ̯t]
📖 Hier herrscht echte Gemütlichkeit

(heer herrscht ekh-tuh
ɡəˈmyːtlɪçkaɪ̯t)
True coziness reigns here

In Germany this word conveys a deep almost tangible coziness: a wooden table, soft light, a feeling of reliability and calm, when the soul can finally relax its shoulders and just be

What if we put everything aside right now and just hit the road? Not to get somewhere, but to feel the freedom and see how beautiful the world around us is? 😊

This weekend we suggest finding inspiration in a movie that will make you want to live a little more risky life and see the world more broadly. It's «The Secret Life of Walter Mitty», directed by Ben Stiller. It’s a kind and inspiring story about how an ordinary person found the strength to step out of the office and turn his fantasies into real adventures 🎬

It has everything that makes the heart beat faster — not because of special effects, but because of our planet itself: the glaciers of Iceland, fjords fading into fog, roads where you can forget about time. And then — the silence of the Himalayas, where among the peaks comes a simple and clear understanding that the journey isn't just about movement. Sometimes one step out of your familiar world is enough to slow down and catch that very moment when you realize that beautiful things don't ask for attention — they're all around us right now ✨

The movie is about the courage to live outside of patterns and follow your heart; about the fact that your story is already waiting for you around the corner 🤩

Have you ever watched this film? What would resonate with you the most in it?

#aris_place ❤️

And here we are again to guess the next landmark and its location!🤩

😆Imagine a place where spirituality hangs quite literally by a thread. Its spiritual core is a wooden temple that seems to grow from the peak of an high cliff on a solitary river island. You can only reach it through a swaying bridge that treads over the icy turquoise waters of a mountain river. Right in the opposite direction — hidden in the sheer cliff on the shore there is a cave. Deep inside there is an icon carved into the stone — silent, ancient, and inseparable from the mountain itself. The name of this place is a direct nod to a legendary Greek island of revelation, however it's located in the very heart of another, continental, mountainous region famous for its pristine power. Here the silence sounds louder than words, and the landscapes seem to have stepped right off the pages of an epic saga

Any guesses to what place this is? 😅

✨Word of the Day: Sunbeam✨

Have you ever paused, watching as sunbeams gently break through the leaves, creating a magical play of light and shadow? It is a fleeting wonder of nature full of harmony and peace.
Today let's discover how this phenomenon sounds in different languages!

(Komorebi)

(Komorebi ga yasashiku mori o terasu)
The dancing rays of the sun gently illuminate the forest

This word is a gem of Japanese aesthetics. It describes not merely the rays of light breaking through leaves, but the feeling of meditative calmness and unity with nature in a fleeting moment. It is also part of the yokugo tradition concerning natural phenomena reflecting a deep cultural connection to the world

🇨🇳 Chinese: 葉隙光 (Yè xì guāng)

(Yè xì guāng sǎ zài xiǎojìng shang)
In the dance of light filtering through the gaps in the leaves, the forest path is softly illuminated

This expression literally describes rays breaking through the canopy. It is straightforward, yet retains a quiet poetry of forest harmony and a practical view of beauty where the focus is on the precise picture of nature, without extra philosophy

(Namunnip sairo bichineun haessal)
(Namunnip sairo bichineun haessari areumdapta)
The sunlight shining through the leaves is beautiful

This phrase describes the whole scene: light going through the leaves, creating shimmering spots. In Korean culture, such description evokes a feeling of freshness and tranquility in nature, very close to an everyday observation
