We congratulate you on this great holiday which we celebrate on January 7th (According to the Gregorian calendar) in memory of the birth in Bethlehem of the Infant Jesus Christ — the Son of God, who came into the world as our Savior. This is the day when the sky descended to earth, giving hope. Traditionally on the holy night from the 6th to the 7th of January churches hold all-night vigils, and in the morning a great liturgy is celebrated. It is a holiday of silence, wonder and all-conquering love and victory of light over darkness

The main thing you can and should do on Christmas is to gather around the festive table in the warmest family circle full of smiles, kind words, and mutual understanding. And, of course, to find the strength in your heart to forgive old grudge because peace in the soul is the greatest gift of this bright day

1️⃣Tell us about yourself. How did you find out about ARIS?

Hello everyone, my name is Douglas and I'm from Brazil. I found out about ARIS through English and Russian Speaking Clubs soon after I came at the university to study

2️⃣ What did you like in ARIS?

In that moment I realised that it's a group of people working to help international students adapt to university life. I really liked initiatives, events and the fact that students were and are engaged in extracurricular activities, showing their interest

3️⃣Tell us more about your experience in ARIS

For the first time I became a Chairperson in 2023. After a few years of simply participating in ARIS events, I've become the association member, a very active one, by creating videos and helping with events. With time, I was invited to participate in the elections for the position of Chairperson, which led to my election. The responsibilities of this position include holding meetings between representatives of the associations that are part of ARIS

4️⃣ What inspires you to continue working within ARIS?

I'm always inspired to work in the association to attract other international students and the fact that we can work together to introduce everyone to different cultures, organising events that promote unity among different cultures and groups

Douglas is a very talented and open-minded student, activist, and good friend who came from a very distant place. We wish him success, and ARIS is inspired by him ❤️

Its untangling has become a tradition, and when you first turn it on, it’s like a small lottery: will all the bulbs light up or not? So how does the «Christmas garland» sound in other languages?

🇮🇹 Italian: Ghirlanda natalizia [gee-ran-da na-ta-li-tsya]

We hung a beautiful Christmas garland on the door
This phrase sounds very unusual and interesting, like a real spell! The soft "gh" at the beginning smoothly transitions into the melodious ending "-izia". It's this dynamic transition that creates the image, as if one ray of light first flashes on the wire, and in the second the entire space is lightened up

🇫🇷 French: Guirlande de Noël [gweer-land duh no-el]

The Christmas garland is a bit old but it has its charm
This French phrase sounds elegant and graceful. There are no harsh consonants, mostly it’s sonorous and soft sounds that create a sense of gentle restraint. In the word "garland", there's a transition from the "r(l)" sound to the nasal "ã", which sounds very unusual, and the sound in "Noël" gives the whole phrase that holiday note
