🇬🇼 Mixed reaction in Guinea-Bissau after junta bars Umaro Sissoco Embalo from returning
Residents in Bissau have reacted with mixed views after Guinea-Bissau’s military junta blocked former president Umaro Sissoco Embalo from returning from exile. Embalo, who has been living in Morocco since the military takeover in November last year, had said earlier this week that he would return on Sunday and contest the presidential election due in December. The military said security conditions and the need to preserve public order justified the move.
Embalo left after the 26 November coup, which followed a disputed election in which both he and the opposition candidate claimed victory. A new constitution approved in an August referendum expanded presidential powers and requires candidates to have lived continuously in the country for the previous five years, while the junta said on Thursday that restrictions on political demonstrations, gatherings and meetings remain in force.
