🇨🇩 🇨🇳 Chinese firms hold stakes in 54% of DRC critical mining projects

Chinese companies now hold minority or majority stakes in 54% of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s critical mining projects, according to the latest update of the critical minerals database produced by Africa Business+ in partnership with EY. The report says China’s presence in the DRC has expanded to 49 projects, underlining its growing role in the world’s second-largest copper producer.

The investments involve both private Chinese groups and state-owned firms. The DRC is a major global source of copper and cobalt, including output from the Tenke Fungurume mine, one of the world’s largest copper and cobalt operations.

The Africa Report China’s grip on DRC critical minerals tightens: 49 projects and counting Chinese firms are involved in more than half of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s critical mining projects, up from fewer than a third in 2023, as Beijing’s long-term strategy pays off.
