🇪🇬 Egypt details transport drive to become regional trade and logistics hub

Egypt is expanding ports, roads, bridges and railways as part of a government plan to turn the country into a regional hub linking Africa, Europe and Asia, Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir told African Business in an article published on 29 September. He said five new ports have been built, bringing Egypt’s total commercial ports to 19, while total port area has increased to 100m square metres from 40m square metres in 2014. The government also plans 33 dry ports and logistics zones, and says all investments in the ports sector and its hinterland will be made with Egyptian capital, while private companies can participate in management and operations.

Al-Wazir said 7,500 km of new roads and 10,000 km of upgraded roads have been completed over the past decade, alongside 35 new Nile crossings, taking the total number of axes and bridges to 73, and 1,000 new overpasses and tunnels, raising the national total to 2,500. He said Egypt has also signed agreements with shipping groups including MSC, MAERSK and CMA CGM as part of its Vision 2030 strategy to boost trade, investment and economic growth.
