🇹🇿 Tanzania awaits High Court ruling in Tundu Lissu treason case
Tanzania’s High Court is nearing a decision in the treason case against Tundu Lissu, chairperson of Chadema, the country’s largest opposition party. A ruling could result in a prison sentence, a mandatory death penalty if he is convicted of treason, or an acquittal for lack of evidence. Lissu attended a hearing in Dar es Salaam on 21 August 2026 on whether he had a case to answer.
The case has drawn nationwide attention as it approaches closure. President Samia Suluhu Hassan remains in office as the proceedings continue.
