🇰🇪🇳🇬 Court allows Dangote’s $16bn Lamu refinery groundbreaking to proceed amid land dispute

A court in Kenya declined to halt the 30 September groundbreaking of Aliko Dangote’s planned $16bn oil refinery in Lamu County, despite a legal challenge over ancestral land claims. Residents are seeking recognition of their land rights and compensation as the dispute intensifies around the project.

The case has emerged at the last minute ahead of the launch of the refinery project backed by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote. Kenyan President William Ruto visited the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemical Company in Lekki, Nigeria, on 25 September 2026.
