🇧🇫 Burkina Faso opens first gold refinery in Ouagadougou
Burkina Faso on 28 September inaugurated its first gold refinery, Raffinor-BF, in Ouagadougou in the presence of junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré, according to the presidency. Construction of the state-backed refinery began in late November 2023. The plant has capacity to process 164 tonnes of gold a year, with plans to eventually raise this to 515 tonnes. The project cost more than CFA11bn, or about $20m, and was financed by the Burkinabè state in partnership with domestic private investors.
The presidency said the refinery is part of a drive for greater economic independence and domestic processing of mineral resources. Authorities said the facility is expected to create 100 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs.
