🇪🇹 International Crisis Group warns Ethiopia is slipping into renewed war

The International Crisis Group said on 28 September that Ethiopia is slipping into renewed war after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and allied groups launched a coordinated offensive against the federal government. Large-scale fighting began last week after TPLF forces took over three airports in Mekelle previously under federal control, retook Axum and Shire, and advanced on fronts in Amhara and along the Tigray-Afar boundary. The federal government has cancelled all flights to Tigray.

The offensive follows the collapse of a fragile peace established after the November 2022 deal that ended the Tigray war, which lasted from November 2020 to November 2022. ICG said fighting intensified after the TPLF returned to power in Tigray in late April and early May, installing Debretsion Gebremichael as regional president, while government sources gave mixed signals over whether Addis Ababa will avoid or expand a wider counteroffensive.
