🇸🇩🇹🇩 UN says over 55,000 Sudanese refugees fled to eastern Chad this year
More than 55,000 Sudanese refugees have crossed into eastern Chad since the start of 2026, the United Nations said on September 25, warning that arrivals had accelerated sharply over the past week. UN regional refugee coordinator Mamadou Dian Balde said more than 400 people a day were now crossing through the border areas of Adre and Tine, around 20 times the daily rate seen in previous months.
The UN said nearly one million Sudanese refugees have crossed into Chad since the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces began in April 2023. UNHCR said it has received only 18 percent of the $1.6 billion needed this year for the regional response, while more than 190,000 refugees remain in difficult conditions in Chad's border areas.
