🇨🇫 ICC convicts former CAR militia commander of crimes against humanity
The International Criminal Court on 23 September convicted former Central African Republic rebel commander Mahamat Said Abdel Kani of crimes against humanity for abusing and torturing prisoners at a detention facility in Bangui. Judges in The Hague found him responsible for crimes committed during fighting more than a decade ago between the Seleka rebels and anti-Balaka militias.
The verdict follows a 15-year ICC investigation into crimes in the Central African Republic, which prosecutor Karim Khan said in 2022 would be closed due to limited resources. Justice Minister Arnaud Djoubaye Abazène welcomed the ruling, while the Special Criminal Court in Bangui continues separate prosecutions and has indicted more than 30 people since issuing its first verdict in 2022.
