🇪🇹 Tigray rebel forces seize regional airport in Mekelle
Forces of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front took control of Alula Aba Nega Airport in Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, according to an airport employee and a foreign security source cited by AFP. Flight Radar showed that Wednesday morning’s flight between Mekelle and Addis Ababa was cancelled, while Ethiopian Airlines said it had temporarily suspended flights to Mekelle, Axum and Shire effective the same day due to the current situation in Tigray.
The TPLF controls Tigray and fought a civil war with Ethiopia’s federal government in 2020-2022 that killed about 600,000 people, according to African Union estimates. Sporadic clashes in recent months have raised fears of renewed conflict.
